Don't you love these crotchety old timey ball players (I'm talkin' to you, Bob Feller) from the 50s, 60s & 70s who absolutely kill the 90s generation for steroids and HGH? Who actually believes that a similar portion of yesterday's players would not have given it a try if you told them it would give them an edge on the playing field, earn them extra money, extend their careers, and help them recover from injuries? Come on . . . I was born at night, but it wasn't last night.
Once again from Jim Bouton's 1970 classic Ball Four:
I've tried a lot of other things through the years---like butazolidin, which is what they give to horses. And D.M.S.O.---dimethylsulfoxide. Whitey Ford used that for a while. You rub it on with a plastic glove and as soon as it gets on your arm you can taste it in your mouth. It's not available anymore, though. Word is it can blind you. I've also taken shots---novacaine, cortisone, and xylocaine. Baseball players will take anything. If you had a pill that would guarantee a pitcher 20 wins but might take five years off his life, he'd take it.
