Fellas-
Need some help deciding what to do with my 2nd round pick in my Keeper Draft this Sunday.
I've traded-up to the 2nd overall pick in the 1st round, where I'll choose Frank Gore (MJD's going 1st overall) over guys like MB3, Jacobs, etc.
After choosing Gore, my roster will be (we keep 3 max):
QB1:
QB2:
RB1: Frank Gore
RB2: Chris Johnson
RB3: Ronnie Brown
RB4:
WR1: Calvin Johnson
WR2:
WR3:
I'm torn on what to do with my 2nd round pick. As always, there's a few possible scenarios. While I've got my own ideas of what would be best/worst/so-so -case scenarios, I'd really like to hear your guys' opinions.
My league (Combo scoring, .5 PPR) starts: 1QB, 2RBs, 2WRs and/or TEs and a Flex (RB or WR/TE).
When I pick in the 2nd, the following guys--in no particular order--may be available:
RB Kevin Smith
WR Reggie Wayne
QB Tom Brady
WR Anquan Boldin
QB Peyton Manning
RB Knowshon Moreno
While this is a keeper league, I personally don't see any available RBs/WRs that are good enough to unseat Gore/Johnson/Brown as my keepers next year, so I'm not especially looking for a keeper RB/WR here.
Additionally, I think my roster is good enough to challenge for a title this year, so to me this is a "win now" pick.
Here are my thoughts in regards to the best/worst/so-so -cases:
BEST CASE
Tom Brady is available. He's got a chance to be a beast, and put me over the top. If he happens to perform like he did in '07, I would obviously have to consider keeping him, too.
2nd BEST CASE
Peyton Manning. He's as solid as they come, but I'm looking for difference-maker here. Will he be much better than QBs I can get later?
3rd BEST CASE
Reggie Wayne is available. I think he's the next-best difference-maker if available. Even though he KILLED me down the stretch last year, I think the Colts O is in line to bounce back this year.
4th BEST CASE
Anquan Boldin. I'm a BIG Boldin fan (at 20ppg last year, he was far and away our league's leading WR in terms of PPG--our league average for WR1s was 14ppg last year). I just have a hard time justifying taking a team's #2 WR (Boldin) over a team like the Colts' #1 WR (Wayne).
It's also worth noting that my 3rd round pick occurs 9 picks later.
So, while Brady is my best-case scenario, it also means it's least likely to happen. I'm fairly sure I'll pull the trigger on him if he's there--he just offers too much upside for a gambler like me to pass up.
My quandary occurs if Brady's not there.
Will Manning give me more of a weekly advantage over my peers, or will Wayne/Boldin give me more or a weekly advantage???
Thanks for--yet again--reading through another long-winded post from me, and would really appreciate any input you guys could offer.
Starred4life
GO COWBOYS!
Always nice to see the rankings. Thanks for the work.
starred4life, I'm assuming Brees was kept; what other guys AREN'T available? It would be nice to see what your fallback options are at QB.
I'd like help with something as well. 16 team Keeper League (almost a dynasty league; we keep 10) with a couple quirks.
We start one RB, 4 WR/TEs, and a flex player who gets credit for 1/2 of his total rushing yards for the week -- so TD guys and pass catchers benefit in that spot. Scoring is:
1/7.5 yards rushing (1/15 if flex)
1/10 receiving
.5 per reception
6 per TD
I have Chris Johnson and MJD, with Welker, Gonzalez, and Walter at WR and Cooley and Winslow at TE (you can start multiple TEs). I have the opportunity to trade MJD and Winslow for Fitzgerald and Slaton. MJD is obviously a beast, but I'm getting a great package back. Does the flex postion play into this decision? What would y'all do?
Thanks,
Jason
Jason-
Drew Brees couldn't be kept this year (we're in a 3-year max keep league and he'd been kept for 3yrs), so he is available. Buuuut, "league scuttlebutt" has it that he will be off the board by the time I pick in the 1st round, so I'm assuming he won't be an option.
As far as the QBs that ARE being kept and therefore unavailable:
A. Rodgers
M. Cassell
K. Warner
T. Romo
Thanks for taking the time to help out...
Jason-
Wow, that sounds like a pretty confusing scoring system...starting 1 RB seems weird, too, but then again I'm a 'sheltered' FFer, I only play in my keeper League.
Sounds like you guys are really trying some new ways to level the playing field between WRs & RBs...
About the trade, I think I'd say do it.
While I think MJD will be the leading fantasy scorer this year, I don't think he'll outscore Slaton by that much. The difference between those two certainly won't be as large as the gap between Fitzy & Winslow.
Since it appears your league is slanted toward pass-catchers, I'd go ahead and grab the best WR out there. After all, Slaton & CJ are certainly nothing to sneeze at as RBs, either.
Well, Brady ended up falling to me in the 2nd round. Can't believe my 'best-case' scenario ended up happening--it rarely does.
How do you guys think I drafted?
(3 player, 3-year max keeper league, cost to keep is the round player was drafted)
We start: 1 QB, 2RBs, 2 WR/TEs, 1 K & 1 FLEX (RB/WR/TE)
QB1: Tom Brady (2.02)
QB2: Chad Pennington (13.11)
RB1: Frank Gore (1.02)
RB2: Chris Johnson (Keeper--4th Rd cost)
RB3: Ronnie Brown (Keeper--9th Rd cost)
RB4: Ahmad Bradshaw (6.11)
WR/TE1: Calvin Johnson (Keeper--5th Rd cost)
WR/TE2: Chad Ochocinco (3.04)
WR/TE3: Nate Washington (18.11)
WR/TE4: Percy Harvin (10.11)
WR/TE5: Chris Henry (11.11)
WR/TE6: Jeremy Shockey (15.11)
K1: Lawrence Tynes
K2: Garrett Hartley
Really nervous about this banged-up, pot-smokin', bad attitude-havin' motley crew of WRs I have...feel like I'm 'swinging for the fences' (as Chris likes to say) waaay too much with this WR corps.
Also feel like I reached big-time for Bradshaw, but I like his talent a lot, and see a pretty big role for him this year. Plus, due to traded draft picks & keepers, I didn't pick again until the 10th round, so I felt like I had to go for quality RB depth while I had the chance. And honestly, with 19 RBs being kept, there wasn't much there at that point (W. McGahee, R. Williams, C. Taylor, and the like).
Thoughts?
Starred, you didn't say how many teams are in the league? In a 10-team league, that's a strong roster that should challenge in the playoffs. In a 12-team league, you can mail in your championship. ;)
If I was going to nitpick, your 2nd wideout spot is potentially a weakness. I'm not crazy about Pennington as your 2nd QB either (if Brady gets hurt, your team's outlook changes dramatically).
That said, I'd feel VERY good going into the season with your lineup.
Ed-
It's a 12-team league I'm in.
Thanks for the compliments...I feel pretty good about the roster too, but like you worry about my WR2 spot/WRs in general.
They're a bunch of guys who could be good. Outside of Ocho & Megatron, none of my WRs have a track record (heck, even Calvin's only got a year of elite production under his belt), so that's a little scary.
Usually I look for a consistent veteran for my WR3 spot, but this year I've obviously gone in a completely different direction.
I'm trying to work a trade for Anthony Gonzalez now, but the owner wants the farm for him. Have a funny feeling I'll be looking for a good WR3 all year...
I'm just hoping Brady stays around 70% of his 2007 production. If he does that, he should still give me a healthy weekly advantage. Anything more than that would be a huge bonus.
